History of INC

• founded on 28 December 1885
• On 28-31 December 1885, the Indian National Congress was founded at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay, with 72 delegates in attendance.
• Actually the meeting was decided to conduct at Pune and then it was organized to held at Mumbai due to Plague in Pune.
• A O Hume assumed office as the General Secretary, and W C Bonnerjee of Calcutta was elected President.
• The majority of delegates participated in the Bombay session was from Madras province.
• 9 resolutions were passed in the first session.
• The first resolution was presented by G Subrahmanya Ayyar(Grand Old Man of South India).
• The name INC was given by Dadabhai Navroji(Grand Old Man of India).
• Lord Dufferin was the british viceroy at the time of formation of INC.
• The act that made cause of formation of INC was homestead act 1862 in America and the theory was Safety Valve Theory.
• The only malayalie participated in the first session of INC was G P Pillai.

Important Sessions of INC

Second Session of INC(1886)

• The second session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1886.
• The president of the session was Dadabhai Navroji, was a Parsi intellectual.
• He became the president of INC 3 times-

               o   1886 – Kolakata session

               o   1893 – Lahore session

               o   1906- Kolkata session

Third Session of INC (1887)

• The third session of INC was held at Madras in 1887.
• Badruddin Tyabji made Presidential Address to the Third Session ,he was the first Muslim president of INC.

Fourth Session of INC (1888)

• The Fourth session of INC was held at Allahabad in 1888.
• George Yule made Presidential Address to the Fourth Session, he was the first Non-Indian president of INC.

Fifth Session of INC (1889)

• The Fifth session of INC was held at Bombay in 1889.
• William Wedderburn made Presidential Address to the Fifth Session, he was the second Non-Indian president of INC.
• In 1910 Allahabad session also presided by William Wedderburn.

Seventh Session of INC (1891)

• The Seventh session of INC was held at Nagpur in 1891.
• Anandacharlu made Presidential Address to the Seventh Session, he was the first South Indian president of INC.

Tenth Session of INC (1894)

• The Seventh session of INC was held at Madras in 1894.
• Alfred Webb made Presidential Address to the Tenth Session, he was the Third Non-Indian president of INC.

Twelfth Session of INC (1896)

• The Twelfth session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1896.
• Rahimtulla M. Sayani made Presidential Address to the Twelfth Session.
• Vande Mataram first sung in a political context by Rabindranath Tagore at the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress.
• Is a poem from Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's 1882 novel Anandamath.

Thirteenth Session of INC (1897)

• The Thirteenth session of INC was held at Amravati (Maharashtra) in 1897.
• C. Sankaran Nair made Presidential Address to the Thirteenth Session, he was the only malayalee president of INC.
• “Gandhiyum Arachakathwavum” is a book written by C. Sankaran Nair.

Fifteenth Session of INC (1899)

• The Fifteenth session of INC was held at Lucknow in 1899.
• Romesh Chunder Dutt made Presidential Address to the Fifteenth Session.
• Constitution was approved in this session.

Seventeenth Session of INC (1901)

• The Seventeenth session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1901.
• Dinshaw Edulji Wacha made Presidential Address to the Seventeenth Session.
• The first INC session that Mahathma Gandhi attended with Gopalakrishna Gokhale.

21^st  Session of INC (1905)

• The 21^st  session of INC was held at Banares in 1905.
• Gopal Krishna Gokhale made Presidential Address to the 21^st  Session.
• INC took the Swadeshi call first at the Banaras Session.

22^nd  Session of INC (1906)

• The 22^nd  session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1906.
• Dadabhai Naoroji made Presidential Address to the 22^nd  Session.
• Thus in Calcutta session of 1906, under the leadership of Dadabhai Naoroji, Congress adopted Swaraj as the Goal of Indian people.

23^rd  Session of INC (1907)

• The 23^rd  session of INC was held at Surat (Gujarat) in 1907.
• Rashbihari Ghosh made Presidential Address to the 23^rd  Session.
• Separation of congress partymen into moderates and extremists.

27^th  Session of INC (1911)

• The 27^th  session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1911.
• Bishan Narayan Dar made Presidential Address to the 27^th  Session.
• Our National Anthem Jana Gana Mana was first sung in this session of INC..
